2017 Interior Design Trends: What’s in and what’s out!

OUT: BRASS EVERYTHING – REPLACE IT WITH A COMBINATION OF MIXED METALS

Finish-wise, you will definitely see a slowing down on the brass craze.  This finish is still good in moderation but don’t over-do it!

This year we are getting excited about shiny and mixed metals that have been gaining popularity in industrial and minimalist designs. Mixing metals provides a more eclectic and sophisticated palette. It makes a home feel less catalog and more unique.

OUT: RECLAIMED WOOD – REDUCE IT OR REPLACE IT

We still love some beautiful handmade items, but the truth is excessive use of reclaimed wood is over. Why you might ask? Well, it has been over-done by so many furniture companies that it has done a disservice to the trend, by not capturing what was good about the trend in the first place!  “Real old wood with character and a naturally distressed finish.” There’s still a place for the REAL deal, in moderation.

The polished look of high-lacquered wood will be an emerging trend for 2017. Clean lines and finishes, and the lacquered feel give a polished and tailored look, as well as add another layer of texture to the overall interior space.

OUT: COOL GRAY –REPLACE IT WITH WARM TONES

The all white look is out. 2017 is going to be a year to experiment with colour! Over the past few years the Scandinavian influence has brought us a hue of super cool tones, and now it’s time warm up. We are predicting that warmer tones will take center stage, and colors such as taupe or mink will make a huge comeback in 2017.

OUT: MACRAME! REPLACE IT WITH POTTERY

You may adore the boho-chic trend, but it’s time to retire macramé… again!  There are so many other ways to add bohemian flair to your space instead of covering your walls with cumbersome hangings that are impossible to clean.   If you really love the look, we suggest introducing the style in a more subdued way, a lovely plant hanger in the corner, or a decorative pillow.

OUT: CHEVRON ANYTHING – REPLACE IT WITH FLORALS

The truth is that Chevron is over!  It was fun while it lasted, but now we’re making way for a much more feminine, unexpected pattern—the big, bold, and floral.  We will admit to being surprised when florals started to re-emerge in the last couple seasons, but as they say, ‘everything comes back around’. Big, water-color looking flowers will make any room pop!

OUT: EDDISON BULBS – REPLACE IT WITH LED

We have been over these for a while now… but it really is time to turn out the lights on Edison bulbs. This trend gained steam very quickly, and as such, has faded just as fast.  Ditch the “old-timey-ness” bulbs, and try out some modern energy-saving technology. Combined with subtle designs that delivers clean and sharp patterns of light are what this trend is all about.

OUT : DIY CRAFTS – REPLACE WITH ARTISINAL OBJECTS

For years now the design world has been obsessed with DIYs, thanks largely to Pinterest, Etsy and Instagram, of course. Pallet Furniture, re-purposed dressers and other projects just seem to lack in craftsmanship and maturity. Put down your smartphone and pay a visit to a local art gallery or studio to look for items that are more “Artisan.”  Once you find that special piece, you may also discover a new found appreciation for craftsmanship and materials that require a high level of skill to work with. We see glass blowing, porcelain and fine woodworking (not just chunk s of recycled wood) taking center stage in the upcoming year.

Overall, we think 2017 is looking pretty good.  These trends, for the most part, are welcome and can give your home an updated, fresh look for the new year!
