Get the Mid-Century Look

Since not all of us can pick up and move into a architecturally designed Lloyd Wright or Hollingsworth masterpiece, here are some creative ideas to help you create a mid-century modern space of your very own.

WOOD

The majority of mass produced furniture is comprised of particle board, or compressed fiber board. Make an investment in real wood pieces. Look for items with clean lines, interesting shapes, and in materials like teak wood, walnut or rosewood.  If authentic antique furniture is out of the budget, consider replicas or newer pieces that offer a nod to this traditional style.

WHITE

The majority of Mid-century homes had stark white-washed walls, which allowed for the high quality and craftsmanship of their furniture to take center stage. Consider giving your living space a fresh coat of white, or off-white paint to achieve this timeless look.

 WALLPAPER

While most walls will benefit from clean white lines, wallpaper can add a touch of glamour and nostalgia to your space. Using a bold geometric pattern, or something with a metallic finish you can instantly transform a room. If permanent wallpaper is a little scary, try removable vinyls.

 LIGHTING

Mid-century homes often feature dazzling pendant light fixtures. Bold lighting is a must-have, so shop around for unique, over-sized and architectural looking lights. It’s also important to remember Mid-century is not all about matching, so shake things up with colour, texture and shape.

 ACCESSORIES

Find some retro art, or outfit you coffee or side tables with metallic and structural elements. Consider a starburst wall clock or mirror, chunky colourful table lamps, and throw pillows.

OPEN BAR

Whether it’s a built in wet bar, or a portable cart, mixing cocktails is a quintessential part of entertaining of the Mid-century era. Stock your bar with vintage glasses, liquors, ice bucket, a cocktail shaker and a recipe book to help you mix up some old fashioned favorites. It will be like you just stepped back in time!
