1. Inspect the Roof
Now’s the time to inspect your roof to ensure everything is in tip top shape. Inspect the condition of your shingles, flashing around vents, eaves, soffits and gutters. Make sure gutters and down spouts are free of debris to ensure proper drainage.
2. Clean the Chimney
It is very importand to clean your chimney as built-up creosote inside it can cause a house fire. Don’t fire-up the fireplace until all debris has been cleared and also check if any animals have moved in. It’s a good idea to have a professional chimney sweep come in to do this once a year, and Fall is the perfect time.
3. Heating & Cooling
As the days get cooler, you may find yourself turning up the dial on your thermostat. Perform regular maintenance, change filters and inspect your duct work to ensure your system will be keeping you warm this winter. You can also inspect and seal any cracks and leaks. If your home doesn’t already have a programmable thermostat, now is a good time to have one installed or install one yourself as it can be programmed to automatically adjust your home’s temperature when you’re away or sleeping. This can save significantly on both heating and cooling costs.
4. Windows & Doors
It's important not to forget inspecting your windows and doors. Replace old weather stripping that is loose or worn with new material to cut down on drafts and water damage.
5. Important Testing
Take care of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test and replace smoke and carbon monoxide alarm batteries. Don't forget to also check that your fire extinguishers are fully charged or replaced if needed.
6. Cover Up
For those who won’t be storing their outdoor furniture and barbecue indoors, make sure you have proper covering to protect them from the elements. This doesn’t mean you won’t pull out that grill multiple times in the next few months, but taking proper care of it now will mean less cleaning and maintenance headaches next summer.
