Having a desirable outdoor space is more important than ever with many people forgoing trips to local parks and instead spending time in their own backyard. Backyards, front porches and balconies, will all get more attention, as people confined to their homes crave sunlight, fresh air, a change of scenery and the opportunity to have a socially distant BBQ with neighbours and friends. Home vegetable gardens will also gain ground, as people try to become more self-reliant.

Many homeowners are getting much more use out of their kitchens now as the virus has curbed the ability to go out to eat. A well-appointed kitchen is probably one of the most important amenities on a new buyers checklist with the trend toward large open kitchens where families can gather to cook together. Efficient appliances, a large pantry and an abundance of cabinet space for storing large quantities of food will be a must.

More Privacy in Floor Plans

While large open floor plans and great rooms have been very popular when considering a home, many buyers are now reconsidering the importance of doors, whether to get some work done, or just to get some space. Privacy is trending with even a den, bonus room or finished basement being vital when family members need their own space from non-stop family time.

Choosing the Suburbs

People are choosing the suburbs to live versus densely populated cities. Larger homes with more land and homes with suites or extra rooms to accommodate extended family members are now very important. Buyers want their family close and it is much easier to social distance than in a city center.

Package Delivery Rooms

With more and more shopping taking place online, buyers are requesting a space to receive and disinfect packages. A designated space to accept deliveries, to keep delivered items secure, and also streamline the sanitation process.
