Here on the West Coast Spring is in the air – even though that air is still got a chill to it!
The first signs of spring are the crocuses punching out of the ground and the trees becoming “thicker” with buds. It’s the time of the year when we take a deep breath and dream of new beginnings, of warmer and longer days and of evenings out on the patio.
This is especially true after the long year of self-isolation. It’s time to get outside and tackle those projects in preparation for the amazing summer days to come.
Here are a few Spring checklist items to get you ready!
1. Tree Trimming
The winter can be very hard on your trees so before the leaves start to sprout look closely for any dead branches or areas that need to be trimmed. It is so much easier to spot these areas before the trees are in full bloom. It is very important to also check if any dead branches hanging over your house which will cause debris and leaves in the gutters leading to potential water backup.
2. Roof Checkup
With all the rain we get over our wintery Vancouver Island months it is a great idea to hire a professional to have a good look at your roof. Check for any cracks that may need sealing or any moss or mold that could be accumulating. Acting on any problems sooner rather than later will save a lot of time and money.
3. Gutter Clean Out
Proper gutter cleaning and maintenance will prevent serious home damage such as basement flooding and foundation damage. It is very important to make sure that your downspouts drain away from the foundation and gutters are free from debris.
4. Window Cleaning
Sparkling clean windows make an enormous difference to the appearance of your home. It doesn’t take much time and it can really make a difference inside and on the outside of your home.
5. Crack Repair
Cracks can form on your home’s exterior walls over the winter months. Even the smallest of cracks will need to be addressed by applying some sealants such as caulking.
6. Exterior mechanicals and Appliance Assessment
Yard appliances shouldn’t be overlooked. Give them a quick evaluation to make sure they are in good condition before putting them to the test. Clean air conditioning coils and switch out filters that may look very dirty. Give your lawn mover an inspection and replace any spark plugs or sharpen blades if needed. Ensure the outdoor faucets discharges smoothly without leaks before attaching a hose to it. Give your BBQ a good scrub to get ready for grilling time! Maintenance tips like these will increase the life of your appliances.
7. Power Washing the concrete around your home
Winter is the time for moss build up. Before you set up the furniture on your patio or deck and plant summer annuals along those walkways, it’s time to give the concrete a good spray! Tip: Baking Soda is a natural way to neutralize the acidic conditions that the moss thrives on.
After you have finished your Spring Maintenance Checklist it is time to enjoy the outstanding outdoor living that we are so fortunate to have on Vancouver Island!
