We believe Nanaimo truly offers the best of Island living.
Most people arrive by ferry, and BC Ferries is your main go-to. If you’re coming from the Vancouver area on the mainland, you’ve got a couple of popular routes: you can grab a ferry from Horseshoe Bay (that’s north of Vancouver) right to Departure Bay here in Nanaimo, or from Tsawwassen (south of Vancouver) to Duke Point, also in Nanaimo, or down to Swartz Bay near Victoria. These ferry rides are honestly pretty great – super scenic, and you can just chill out and enjoy the ocean views. If you’re a foot passenger and want a quicker trip directly from downtown Vancouver to Nanaimo, check out Hullo Ferries. They run a fast, comfy catamaran service that zips you right over.
For those coming from further away, or if you’re just in a hurry, flying is definitely the fastest way. Vancouver Island has a few airports: we’ve got our own Nanaimo Airport (YCD), plus Victoria International (YYJ) and Comox Valley (YQQ). You can usually find flights connecting from major Canadian cities, and sometimes even a few U.S. spots. Want a truly unique experience? Consider a seaplane flight! You can hop on one directly from downtown Vancouver and land right in Nanaimo’s inner harbour. Talk about a grand entrance with incredible aerial views! And while you can’t drive directly to the island from the mainland, you can absolutely bring your car on the BC Ferries, which makes exploring once you’re here a breeze!
Outdoor Paradise: From hiking trails in Benson Creek Regional Park (hello, Ammonite Falls!) to kayaking in the harbour, mountain biking in every direction, and golf courses with ocean views, the opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts are endless.
Community Spirit: Experience the vibrant local markets, lively festivals, and a strong sense of community that makes newcomers feel welcome.
Education & Healthcare: Nanaimo is home to Vancouver Island University (VIU), offering a wide range of programs, and a robust healthcare system with Nanaimo Regional General Hospital as a central hub.
Arts & Culture: Enjoy local galleries, live music venues, theatre performances, and a growing culinary scene that reflects the diverse tastes of our residents.
