Hammond Bay
The coast, a little closer.
Hammond Bay follows Nanaimo’s coastal hills, where a bend in the road can open onto water and distant mountains. Shoreline parks give the area much of its character, while the residential streets above them have their own quieter rhythm. The appeal is easy to understand if a walk near the ocean belongs in your everyday routine.

Living in Hammond Bay
Hammond Bay Road follows the coastal hillside between Departure Bay and Nanaimo’s north end. Detached homes, townhouses and patio homes share the area with shoreline parks and viewpoints towards the Strait of Georgia.

01Along Hammond Bay Road
The road connects a series of residential pockets rather than one compact village centre. Homes near Stephenson Point, the shoreline and the streets climbing above Hammond Bay can have quite different outlooks. Some face open water; others look into trees or across neighbouring roofs. Walk the approach as well as the house, especially if an everyday route to the beach matters to you.
The area includes established single-family homes and smaller strata developments. Start a search by deciding how much garden, maintenance and privacy you want before narrowing the choices by view. On a hillside, the usable part of a lot can matter more than its advertised size.
02Shoreline parks and school planning
Neck Point and Pipers Lagoon are two places to get to know when exploring this coast. Pipers Lagoon has trails and ocean viewpoints, with views towards Shack Island. They offer a more useful introduction to the setting than a photograph taken from a home’s deck.
Hammond Bay Elementary, Frank J. Ney Elementary and Dover Bay Secondary are schools to research in this part of Nanaimo. These are starting points for research, not an assignment for a particular address. The homes here
Detached homes are an important part of the area, with established houses, substantial renovations and more contemporary designs. Sloping sites create opportunities for outlooks and multiple levels, but a view home and a home with a level garden are not always the same thing.
