Nanaimo & surroundings · An area guide
More room for life outside.
Cedar is a rural community south of Nanaimo, with wooded properties, open land and a village centre. Its appeal is easy to picture if your plans for home extend beyond the walls: a garden, room for projects or simply a little more distance around you. Daily life here follows a different pattern from an urban street.

01 · Beyond the front door
Cedar lies south of Nanaimo, with farms, acreages and coastal pockets around Cedar-by-the-Sea and Yellow Point. Cedar Village Square gives the rural community a practical centre for everyday errands.
An area guide from Gillette & Associates, Derek Gillette’s Nanaimo real estate practice.

Cedar combines a working rural landscape with the services around Cedar Village Square. That distinction matters when choosing a home: an acreage outside the village and a house close to the shops can offer very different daily routines.
The Cedar Farmers’ Market, local galleries and places to eat are part of the area’s identity. Visit the roads around a property and the village itself before deciding how rural you want to be. Check current opening days directly with businesses when planning a visit.
Cedar-by-the-Sea and the wider Yellow Point area add a coastal side to the search. Rural lots, wooded surroundings and ocean outlooks appear in different combinations. A coastal address does not necessarily include waterfront ownership or public beach access.
For an acreage, ask about the water supply, wastewater system, driveway and the portion of land you can actually use. Establish the property’s boundaries and services before comparing it with a home on a conventional residential street. Those details belong in the purchase conversation from the start.

What to look for
Larger lots and acreages are part of Cedar’s housing character, alongside homes closer to the village. Two properties of the same size can be very different in how much land is usable, how buildings are arranged and how much upkeep is involved.
When comparing a house with a townhouse or apartment, consider outdoor maintenance, parking and ownership responsibilities as well as the rooms.
