EXPLORING OLD CITY QUARTER

Stepping Into Nanaimo’s Heart

There’s a spot in Nanaimo that always feels special to me, a place that truly captures the city’s soul. It’s our Old City Quarter, and if you’re looking for local Nanaimo attractions or want to dive into some unique Nanaimo activities, trust me, this is where you start.

Old City Quarter: A Little Piece of History, Still Thriving Today

Walking into the Old City Quarter is like taking a delightful little step back in time. You can’t help but notice the beautiful old buildings, each with its own story, and those charming brick-lined streets. It’s got this wonderful, welcoming vibe that’s just so different from your typical shopping areas. For me, it’s easily one of our most treasured Nanaimo landmarks because it really shows off the true character of our harbour city.

My Kind of Shopping: Discovering Hidden Gems

If you’re anything like me and prefer unique finds over big chain stores, you are going to love the Old City Quarter. It’s packed with independent boutiques, artisan shops, and specialty stores. I always find something I didn’t even know I needed – whether it’s a handcrafted piece of jewelry, a local artist’s work, or something delicious from one of the gourmet food shops. Seriously, for Nanaimo shopping, this place is a breath of fresh air.

Eating Your Way Through History: So Many Delicious Spots

Okay, let’s talk food – because the Old City Quarter delivers! Whether I’m craving a perfect morning coffee and a flaky pastry, a leisurely brunch with friends, or a cozy dinner, I always find a great spot here. So many of the restaurants really focus on using local ingredients, which just makes everything taste even better. Grab a coffee at White Rabbit or indulge in brunch at Waffle Magic. You really can’t say you’ve experienced Nanaimo dining until you’ve explored the amazing options in this neighbourhood.

More Than Just Shops: Getting Into the Vibe

Beyond the fantastic food and shopping, there’s always something going on.

Art & Culture
I love popping into the local stores and viewing products from local artists. I often find myself buying a print when I stumble into the storefronts Old City Quarter has to offer. You’ll see incredible talent from our region, and even the buildings themselves are works of art if you just take a moment to look. One of my favourite local artists is Asami Watanabe (here is a link to their site: click here.). They create fun colourful illustrations, including some of local businesses around Nanaimo.

Live Music
On many evenings, you’ll hear the sounds of live music drifting from the church or cafes. It adds such a great energy to the streets, and it’s awesome to support local musicians.

Just Walking Around
Honestly, one of my favorite Nanaimo activities here is just taking a slow stroll, soaking it all in, and imagining what these streets were like a hundred years ago. Lights are hung above the streets illuminating the area – bringing a warm and welcoming feel even when it gets later in the day. It is a great place to have a little walk and share a pizza at La Stella.

Where the Community Gathers: All the Nanaimo Events
The Old City Quarter is definitely a hub for our Nanaimo events. From lively street festivals to charming holiday markets, there’s almost always something happening that brings everyone out. These events really highlight the strong community spirit we have here in Nanaimo. Keep an eye on local calendars – you never know what fun you might stumble upon!
