Things People With Nice Smelling Homes Never Do

A nice-smelling home creates a positive environment and sets the tone for the home. However, some people go overboard with home scents using strong air fresheners and unnatural fragrances, trying to hide odours that they don’t clean up. Using strong unnatural scents can actually have the opposite effect intended and deter people from your home, making it feel unwelcoming. This is why it’s important to remove plug-in wall scents and instead deep clean your house when you’re thinking of selling to create the most inviting living space possible for people viewing your home. Some things you can use instead are essential oils or concentrated plants and herbs, which are a great way to lend a fresh smell to your living space because not everyone likes strong fragrances. Sometimes we get nose blind by the familiar smells around us, so if you read below there are awesome ways to create that amazing smelling home!

Here is a list of 8 Things People With Nice Smelling Homes Don’t Do, which you may have seen on our Instagram @derek_gillette. However, also added in this blog is more detail with examples, including The 5 do’s of having a lovely smelling home that people have done to make their home smell amazing!

8 Things That People With Nice-melling Homes Don’t Do:

1. They Never Forget To Clean Out The Fridge

The fridge is the most important appliance in your home. Your refrigerator deserves respect and consistent upkeep. It’s recommended to do a deep clean every 3 to 6 months. This means thoroughly disinfecting it, pulling out all your food and washing up the shelves and fridge with warm soapy water.  Check out The Best Ways to Organize Your Fridge

2. They Never Leave Their Bedsheets On Too Long.

So how long is too long? It’s best to wash your sheets once a week, but if you’re not always sleeping on your mattress, some can get away without cleaning their sheets for two weeks…

3. They Don’t Leave Wet Laundry In The Washer For More Than A Day

Yeah, it happens. And it’s not great; many people learn the hard way that if you leave wet laundry in the washing machine for too long, it starts to develop a smell due to the growth of bacteria and mold. When this happens, no amount of drying will remove the funky odor, which means clothes usually have to be rewashed.

4. They Never Forget To Unclog The Drain

Here are some things you can do to keep that sink clear to avoid funky smells! Attack with boiling water, plunge away at the blockage, break it down with baking soda and vinegar, try the plumber's snake and clean the P-trap. Or just don’t put your coffee grounds, grease or food down the drain…

5. They Don’t Close Their Washer Door, At Least Not Right Away.

Fresh air will cause the water to evaporate faster, ultimately ensuring your washer stays dry and mold-free, and your clothes smell the way you want them to.

6. They Don’t Go too Long Without Opening A Window.

Cracking a window and letting some fresh air enter your home year-round is important. This can lower radon levels, a gas that can seep into our homes from the basement that we cannot smell or see, causing potential health problems. Leaving a window open can also reduce condensation and mold and also lower your risk of getting sick with a fresh air flow and expel unpleasant odors.

7. They Don’t Leave A Cat Litter Box Unattended.

Quick tips to keep the litter box fresh: Clean the litter every day or so, depending on the number of cats you have. Wash the actual box every week and place the litter box in a ventilated area. You can also add baking soda to the litter box, an all-natural deodorizer safe for cats.

8. They Don’t Let The Garbage OverFill & Don’t Throw Food In The Kitchen Trash Bin.

The best thing here is to put your little compost bin in the garage or, if you live in an apartment, to run your compost to the building disposal every couple of days on your way out the door, this makes for low odor and no time for the rotten food stench to seep into you home.

Here are the 5 do’s that Homeowners have done to make their home smell amazing.

1. Add Great Smelling House Plants To Your Collection

Two wonderful flowers that can be grown from the comfort of your home are Jasmine Flowers and Geraniums. Not all jasmine flowers are fragrant, but Jasminum polyanthum is commonly grown indoors and emits a sweet scent at night. The other flowers are geraniums that each have their unique fragrance. Whether you prefer apricot, apple, lemon mint, or strawberry, they can all be grown at home.

2. DIY A Natural Fabric Freshener Spray.

Fabric freshener sprays are great because they’re so simple to make, and you know exactly what goes in them when sticking to a natural scented theme. Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar, 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol, 1 teaspoon of cornstarch, and 20 drops of your favourite essential oil in a small spray bottle. Make sure to shake well before each use and mist it over clothing or upholstery, ensuring that clothes completely dry before folding them.

3. Air Humidifier/Purifyers+Your Favourite essential oil scents.

Air purifiers can refresh stale air, reducing the chances of health issues caused by indoor pollutants. Essential oils can be added to infuse the air with subtle scents in the surrounding space.

4. Wipe Down + Disinfect The Floors.

Giving the floor a good clean can disinfect the floor from everyone's bare feet, shoes or dog feet, while also removing sticky marks in and around the kitchen floor from eating and cooking. Cleaning your floors with a vacuum and wiping it down leaves behind a subtly fresh-smelling and clean-looking floor. *Make sure to use products that are friendly to your hardwood or tile flooring.
