Westwood Lake Park Gets a Major Glow-Up

You know that feeling when a favorite spot gets even better? That’s what’s happening right here in Nanaimo at Westwood Lake Park! It’s been a while since we’ve seen such a significant upgrade, and the buzz around town is definitely justified. The City has been hard at work on a multi-million-dollar project to make one of our most beloved parks more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

The second phase of the project is wrapping up, and the improvements are genuinely impressive. If you’ve visited lately, you’ve probably noticed the changes, but here’s a quick rundown of what’s new:

A Bigger, Better Beach: They’ve almost doubled the size of First Beach, giving us more room to spread out on sunny days.

Brand New Bathrooms: This is a big one! The new accessible washrooms and change rooms are a huge improvement, making a trip to the park much more comfortable for families and people with disabilities.

True Accessibility: The focus on accessibility is a real highlight. The park now features a new boardwalk with small tile spacing, a gently sloping path to the water’s edge, and mobility mats on the sand. This means people using wheelchairs can now get from the parking lot all the way to the lake without a struggle.

More Amenities: They’ve also added more seating, new picnic areas, and even a bike wash and repair station—a nice touch for all the cyclists out there!

These upgrades are more than just cosmetic. As a local resident and wheelchair user, Haley Young, pointed out, these changes are a “game changer.” The new pathways and washrooms mean less time waiting in line and more time enjoying the park. It’s a wonderful example of how our city is investing in our community and ensuring everyone can enjoy the natural beauty we’re so lucky to have.

So, next time you’re looking for a great place to spend an afternoon, be sure to head over to Westwood Lake and check out all the fantastic new features. It’s an exciting time for our park, and it’s proof that a little bit of investment can go a long way in making our community better for all.
