Brechin Hill

Above the harbour, close to the city.

Brechin Hill sits between downtown and Departure Bay, with residential streets rising above the waterfront. Boats and the working harbour give the outlook a sense of movement. It is a place to consider if you enjoy being connected to the city while returning to a smaller residential street.

Older homes above the harbour

Brechin Hill has character homes that have changed in different ways over time. Some retain older architectural details; others have been substantially renovated. Comparing those homes calls for a closer look at what was altered, how it was done and how the rooms now work together.

The hillside creates opportunities for harbour and island views, but they vary from lot to lot. Spend time in the principal rooms and outdoor spaces. A view from one upstairs window can feel quite different from a view that is part of everyday life.

02

Between Estevan Road and downtown

Estevan Road and the Island Highway help orient a first visit. The area has connections to local shops and Nanaimo’s downtown, while the harbour remains an important part of the setting. Map your regular errands and the routes you would walk before deciding on a street.

The Old City offers another concentration of character homes, with a different relationship to downtown businesses. Departure Bay is another useful comparison if your search is driven by the water. Looking at all three helps separate the appeal of an older house from the appeal of its location.

What to look for

The homes here

Established houses, renovated homes and strata properties offer different ways into the area. On the hill, the outlook and the approach to a property can change within a single block. Some homes face the water; others draw their appeal from a garden or their layout.

When comparing a house with a townhouse or apartment, consider outdoor maintenance, parking and ownership responsibilities as well as the rooms.
