Nanaimo & surroundings · An area guide
Well placed for a real working day.
Central Nanaimo is the everyday city around its central road corridors, established homes and services. It has a practical character of its own, distinct from the historic downtown waterfront. For someone who wants to spend less of the day crossing the city, location here is worth a close look.

01 · Beyond the front door
Central Nanaimo includes established streets around the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital area. Mature gardens, detached houses and condominium buildings provide a range of options within the working city.
An area guide from Gillette & Associates, Derek Gillette’s Nanaimo real estate practice.

Central Nanaimo has mature lots and traditional single-family homes alongside condominium buildings. Those differences are useful when comparing the practical work of ownership. An established garden and older house ask different things of an owner than a strata apartment.
Look beyond surface renovations. The layout, storage, parking and quality of previous work affect day-to-day comfort. Two homes on neighbouring streets may have different road exposure or privacy even when their ages and sizes are similar.
Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is a major local landmark. Shopping and other services are spread through the surrounding city, so map the specific places you need to reach. A central location is most useful when it shortens the journeys that matter to you.
Brechin Hill offers a hillside and harbour comparison, while Diver Lake brings a lake setting into a similar city search. Touring nearby areas can help distinguish a preference for an established home from a preference for a particular street or daily route.

What to look for
The housing mix includes older detached homes, apartments and townhouses. Main-road addresses and interior residential streets offer different experiences, even when they are only a short distance apart. Updates, outdoor space and parking vary considerably.
When comparing a house with a townhouse or apartment, consider outdoor maintenance, parking and ownership responsibilities as well as the rooms.
